About Stefan
Stefan was born on 23 August 2006. He is our second son, and he has two brothers.
Trienie experienced various complications during her pregnancy, and Stefan as well after birth. We realised that something was wrong, things were not the same as with his older brother...
For the first four years of his life, Stefan was in and out of hospitals, being diagnosed incorrectly all the time. It was only when we met an oncologist from Pretoria where we were first asked to test him for Fanconi Anemia. Stefan was diagnosed with Fanconia Anemia in December 2010. He was four years old at the time and it felt like the world around us collapsed. We did not know how long our son would live. We asked the question and the response was “we do not know”. Every day from that point in time was seen as a blessing. I made a video at that stage, which I published on Youtube. This was four years ago...
Stefan is a very spontaneous and affectionate little boy. He has 2 brothers (Devan and Rohan), and he loves them to bits. He is full of energy and enjoys excitement and exploring new things in life. He also loves to watch TV and play games on his computer. He is in grade 2 at Laerskool Swartkop in Centurion. Stefan adores his School and his friends very much.
He takes drama and guitar lessons. Archery is one of his weekend hobbies. He also did karate but had to quit because of the contact and the bruising, yet he received his yellow belt.
Stefan wants to be a Rock Star, he wants to be the best quitar player in the world. He also wants to start a band and make lots of mooollaaahhh!!
We always knew that at some stage Stefan would require a bone marrow transplant, we just did not know when this would be. Stefan had to undergo a bone marrow aspiration every year to determine the degradation of his bone marrow in the production of blood cells and blood platelets. During this period he also had to undergo blood tests every two months to analyse his blood counts. To see your son go through this is….you wish that you can carry the cross for him.
Living with FA is not always easy, you never know what to expect. One day you are feeling fine and the next day you are feeling sick and weak.
In the last year his blood platelets and cell counts were deteriorating and he was placed on a chronic dose of a specific steroid called Danogen and received two blood platelet transfusions. The last bone marrow aspiration was performed in May 2014. The results revealed the news, Stefan needs a bone marrow transplant.
After four years we have reached the stage where he has to fight the biggest fight of his life.
This is where we need the help of family, friends and people who have compassion, to see this boy have a extension on life…
Please go through the different news articles, we will keep it up to date and show what is happening in the life of our boy.
Thank you and God Bless
