Super Cars for Super Kids!

When we received this invitation and it stated that only one parent was allowed...who do you think got to go with Stefan????

Jip...Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini and Aston Martin to name some. Any boy or man's dream. I am happy to say that I was able to go with Stefan to the event which was hosted by the Sunflower Fund.

Not even the rain on Sunday morning prevented us from having a great time admiring these machines up close

Unfortunately daddy did not get an opportunity to ride in one of these stunning cars but Stefan was lucky enough to hitch a ride with one of the hottest rides of the day, this being the brand new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

It is such an amazing car, and I was so happy and excited for him...(maybe a little jealous as well). Hey, I am proud of my boy and he deserves this, and you could just see the smile on that face after the ride....

We also met some of the other families who have children with life threatening illness and my hart go out to all of them. As parents you need to be strong for your children and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. These children are the bravest of the brave!!! Keep on fighting, we love you.

Afrikaans is Groot

Trienie and I together with the three boys were invited by Reach for a Dream to go watch AFRIKAANS IS GROOT!!!

What another great concert, everybody enjoyed themselves...

All the kids love music, Stefan plays guitar and Rohan definitely thinks he is a singer of note!! It was funny though that at 10PM they were all fast asleep while mommy and daddy was watching the end of the show. I do not think that any of us are used to going out on a "school night"!

It was great fun, the kids will never forget it and we have some great memories with them being with us.

Thank you to the wonderful people at Reach for a Dream, you have become part of our extended family and we really appreciate your support.

Bikers4Bandanas

The Sunflower Fund had their annual Bikers4Bandana day on Sunday 19 October. We wanted to support this initiative and also joined in on the ride. Our group of friends decided to meet for breakfast at Countless Ours before the ride started. Thank you Cobus for arranging breakfast!

All the bikers met at the Shell Ultra City in Samrand and from there we departed to Monte Casino to attend the Bierfest. This was my first ride in a group and I did not know what to expect!! Luckily we had some experienced riders with us and they made it very easy for us.

At the end of the day it was a lot of fun, but more important it was for a very good cause.

Thank you to my fellow riders: Julius, Janet, Roger, Kobus, Karen, Pieter and Francois. We will do it again very soon.

Visit to Oncologist

Stefan had his regular check-up this past weekend. His blood was drawn again to determine the blood and platelet counts.

There was some good news and some news we expected but hoped to prolong a bit more. I thought it would be a good idea to show his results below:

His results are shown for the last year in the above image. The bloodcounts looked good, and increased marginally. This was probably due to his medication, and is at the lower ranges of what it should be. The problem is with his platelet count. It reduced from 24 to 19. Normal platelet counts are between 150 and 450, and you can see that it is only 10% of what it should be.

In May the levels were 16 and Stefan recevied a platelet transfer. You can find the news article that was published at that stage. His levels are moving to that level again and is something that would have to be monitored carefully.

Based on the results above our oncologist informed us that he activated the search for a bone marrow donor. So, the time has come and the process has started.

Another preliminary search will be done on the local donor list. We looked at the previous search results and the doctor explained to us some things that we were not aware of. There were six possible matches the last time, of which two will be eliminated immediately due to ethnic incompatability. Of the four that remained, they were all female. He explained to us that statistically it is proven that a transplant has a higher success rate if the donor is the same gender.

Hopefully there are some new donors that have registered since the last search was done because we need a young man this time!!!

He also said that our best chance for a good match would probably come from a fairly young male donor from Germany. We will wait for the new search results and keep the news updated.

Let's all hope and pray for the right donor. Thank you for all your support during this time, we are very positive and know that everything will work out fine.
